March Arts Marathon:

A collection of stories from Jerusalem, Berlin, London . . . and back again

March Arts Marathon Participant: Eric Levi Jacobson

Mission: I am working on a book of short stories

Message: I am participating this year in the fundraising efforts of Central Vermont Refugee Action Network. CVRAN does important work in making Vermont a more habitable place to live for people coming from all over the world: from Afghanistan, from the African Great Lakes region, from Nepal/Bhutan, from Ethiopia/Eritrea. Having spent most of my adult life as a stranger in strange lands, I am aware of how much more hospitable Vermont has become to the world, and I am grateful to organizations like CVRAN for helping to make this possible. This year will be incredibly difficult for refugees and migrants in Vermont and the USA. I know we are going to have to make a concerted effort to fight back. Please consider making a donation.

About my work:
Picking up from the stories I shared during the March Marathon last year, I’ll be returning to Jerusalem during the first intifada (1988-1989) with a few new tales of impossibility. Last year I particularly enjoyed writing portraits of friendships from Berlin in the 90s. Berlin and Jerusalem from those years hardly exist today. Events have conspired to eliminate those cities and places and people as I knew them. Returning can be a reparation. I have some ideas I would like to try out.

Last time I was surprised at the difficulty of writing something I’ve been calling “Restoring the House” – a migrant philosopher with no material skills sets about restoring an old Vermont house in all its nails, joists, plaster and lath, and discovers the displacement of itineracy, the gendering of work, the centrality of home and homelessness in America. I would like to try again this year.

This year, I am also teaching on fascism and on the philosopher Walter Benjamin, and giving talks and papers on the philosophers Emmanuel Levinas and Hannah Arendt. So there may be some philosophy and politics tucked in.
