We have been hearing a lot about the housing challenges in Montpelier. And for good reason. The inventory is scarce. The prices are high. Even for those with resources, finding a house or apartment one can afford is difficult, if not impossible.
Now imagine that you are a refugee family with many children who had to flee your country in fear for your lives. You came to the U.S. a relatively short while ago, traumatized, speaking no English, and having no visible means of support. This is the situation with our Afghan families who arrived in Montpelier in December of 2021, just a few months after having been airlifted out of Kabul by the U.S. military in August 2021.
CVRAN established the Affordable Housing Fund in order to address this crisis. If we want to be able to make it possible for refugees and asylum seekers to live in our community, we must help them find affordable housing. We want to welcome these families into our midst, help them get on their feet, provide resources and friendship, enable them to find local employment, and help send their children to our schools. But without affordable housing, none of this can happen.
In conjunction with Downstreet Housing and Development, we recently purchased a 4 – 5 bedroom house in Montpelier to rent to to an Afghan family of nine. We are continuing to fundraise for this house in order to complete all of the necessary renovations. Our goal is to have the house ready for occupancy in Spring 2024. A matching pledge up to $70,000 is available. Double your donation by taking advantage of this awesomely generous pledge!
Your donation to CVRAN’s housing fund will support this family and others by offering them affordable housing in our community.
